Early Life & Background
Kenny Pickett was born on 6 June 1998 in the Oakhurst section of Ocean Township, New Jersey. He attended Ocean Township High School, where he graduated in 2017 and finished his high-school career with 4,670 passing yards and 43 touchdowns, plus 873 rushing yards and 17 more scores on the ground. As a junior he led the Spartans to the Central Group III semifinal with a 9-2 record.
He committed to Temple first, but switched to the University of Pittsburgh – a change that, in hindsight, shaped everything that followed. Recruiting services did not see a future first-round pick: 247Sports ranked him only the 23rd-best high-school player in New Jersey in his senior year.
Off the field, Pickett was a serious student. He graduated from Pitt with a degree in marketing and then enrolled in the Katz Graduate School of Business, which is a big part of why he is known as one of the more articulate quarterbacks of his generation.

His senior season in 2021 was the leap: school records for single-season passing yards and touchdowns, a first-team All-American selection, a third-place Heisman finish and an ACC championship.

On the ground, Pickett has 111 carries for 328 yards and five touchdowns. Those totals are through the end of 2025; he has since appeared in a 2026 game as a Panther, so some trackers now list 37 regular-season games. Because he is a backup, expect his 2026 numbers to stay small unless Bryce Young misses time.
Career Highlights So Far
The Steelers took him 20th overall in 2022, the highest they had picked a quarterback since Ben Roethlisberger in 2004, and the pick was announced by Franco Harris in one of his final public appearances. After spending the opening weeks on the bench, Pickett debuted in Week 4 against the Jets, running for two touchdowns but throwing three interceptions in a loss. He became the starter days later.
His rookie season produced one genuine record: in Weeks 16 and 17 of 2022, he threw a game-winning touchdown in the final minute against the Raiders and then against the Ravens, making him the first rookie quarterback in NFL history to do so in consecutive games. He finished the year with 2,404 passing yards, seven touchdowns and nine interceptions.
In Philadelphia he became a champion without throwing many passes. He filled in for an injured Jalen Hurts in Week 16 against Washington, then started Week 17 against Dallas in a 41-7 win, and he took the final snaps of the NFC Championship and Super Bowl LIX, which the Eagles won 40-22 over Kansas City.
In 2025 he was traded twice. The Eagles sent him to Cleveland in March, and the Browns moved him to the Raiders in August for a 2026 fifth-round pick after he lost the starting competition to Joe Flacco. In Las Vegas he backed up Geno Smith and started one game in Week 15 when Smith was hurt, a 31-0 loss to the Eagles in which he completed 15 of 25 passes.

Kenny Pickett’s Team in 2026: Carolina Panthers
The Panthers signed Pickett to be the backup to Bryce Young, behind whom he competed for the QB2 job with veteran Andy Dalton. Carolina had just won the NFC South in 2025 and reached the playoffs for the first time since 2017, so Pickett is joining a team on the rise, and the move reunites him with an offence built around quarterback mobility under coach Dave Canales.
He started the Hall of Fame Game against the Cardinals in August, completing eight of 11 passes for 62 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. In September he was listed as QB2 behind Young against the Falcons, with Haynes King as the emergency third quarterback. Pickett wears number 12 in Carolina.
Kenny Pickett Wife: Amy Paternoster
Pickett married Amy Paternoster on 24 June 2023. Amy is a former women’s soccer player at Princeton University, and the wedding took place during the quiet stretch of his NFL offseason, soon after his rookie year as a starter.

Kenny Pickett Net Worth
There is no verified figure for Kenny Pickett’s net worth. What we can say is that his career cash earnings through 2026 are about $18 million before taxes, agent fees and living costs, which means his actual net worth is meaningfully lower than that headline number. His 2026 earnings are tied to a $4 million guaranteed contract, and any further earnings in 2027 depend on whether he re-signs as a starter or backup. Treat any exact net-worth number you see online as an unconfirmed estimate.

Playing Style: What Made Him Different
Pickett’s college tape was full of accuracy, quick processing and a willingness to take a hit. At Pitt he beat defences with decision-making rather than raw arm strength, and he stood in against pressure. His pro career has been harder to read: the touchdown rate dropped to a league-low in 2023, and the offence around him has often been poor, which makes it difficult to judge him fairly. His strengths are mobility, toughness and a calm demeanour as a backup, while his challenge is consistently turning drives into touchdowns.
Hand size remained a talking point from the 2022 combine, when he measured 8½ inches, the smallest for a quarterback in the modern measurement era. He has downplayed it, and his college and NFL fumble numbers have not been a defining issue.
Kenny Pickett’s Legacy So Far
It is easy to define Kenny Pickett by what did not work: a failed starting job in Pittsburgh, three team changes in two years. It would be more accurate to say that he has been a first-round pick who was handed a hard situation, produced some real moments, and has become a respected veteran backup who owns a Super Bowl ring. At 28, there is still time for a second act: if Bryce Young misses time or a starting job opens elsewhere in 2027, Pickett’s experience of 27 NFL starts makes him one of the more credible bridge options on the market.
